The following are lyrics from a song titled “The Scarred, Strangled, Slander”. This provocative track is by my old metalcore band, Through The Discipline, and is off our full-length album from 2004, Art of Survival (Jailhouse Records).

These words were written during the immediate aftermath of the attacks in New York City and Washington, DC on September 11th, 2001.

I wrote them at age 19, fueled by angst and rebelliousness. Also at this young age, I was fueled by critical thinking.

Don’t get me wrong, that period harbored a unifying sentiment in the US, especially here in NYC.

Conversely, to me, the over-the-top patriotism in the media seemed, well, patronizing. I wasn’t rallying behind the Stars & Stripes so much as I was angered that I lost a friend in the World Trade Center.

I detest Wall St.

I didn’t get chills when President George W. Bush threw out the first pitch at Game 3 of the World Series at my beloved Yankee Stadium that year.

I was pissed.

Not to mention, in hindsight, actions made by the US government and military may have provoked 9/11. Since the Cold War of the 1980s leading up to the attack, the US & Afghanistan’s…
